Japan introduces AI virtual police officer to fight online scams

Japan launched an AI virtual police officer to warn citizens about rising online scams that caused over $2 billion in losses last year

(Web Desk) - Japan has launched an artificial intelligence-based virtual police officer to raise awareness and combat rising cases of online fraud and cyber scams.

The initiative, introduced by the Osaka Prefectural Police, features an AI character in the form of a young woman who appears in YouTube videos and educates the public on how to identify and avoid various types of scams. The virtual officer warns citizens that anyone claiming to be a police official over video calls may be a fraudster.

Authorities said the move comes as Japan faces growing financial losses from scams involving fake investments, fake romantic partners, impersonation of police officers, and celebrity impersonation schemes, which caused losses exceeding $2 billion last year.

The AI system uses real scam scenarios and conversations to demonstrate how fraudsters operate and what warning signs the public should watch for to avoid falling victim.
