ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Electricity prices are likely to increase as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for a tariff adjustment.
The CPPA has sought an increase of 82 paisa per unit under the monthly fuel adjustment mechanism for May. NEPRA will hold a hearing on the request before making a final decision.
If approved, the proposed increase could place an additional financial burden of around Rs12 billion on electricity consumers.
According to the CPPA’s application, 12.638 billion units of electricity were generated during May, with the average fuel cost recorded at Rs9.25 per unit. The estimated fuel cost for the month was Rs8.43 per unit.
The power generation mix in May included 33.27% electricity from hydropower, 11.66% from local coal, 13.54% from imported coal, 0.16% from furnace oil, and 8.31% from local gas.
NEPRA will review the data submitted by CPPA and announce its decision after completing the assessment.
