TEHRAN (Dunya News) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated on Sunday that Tehran was willing to provide assurances that the country was not seeking a nuclear weapon, while insisting that Iran would not relinquish its right to enrich uranium.
“What the United States demands is that Iran not build an atomic bomb. This is nothing new, and we can also state in writing that we have no intention of building a bomb,” the president’s website quoted him as saying.
“However, we will not relinquish our right to enrichment, and the other side will have no choice but to accept this right,” he added, before Iranian and US negotiators were set to meet for talks in Switzerland later on Sunday.
According to Iranian news agency Tasnim, the president stated that under the initial agreement aimed at ending hostilities with the United States, Iran is expected to regain access to nearly $6 billion in frozen assets held in Qatar.
He said that the understandings reached reflect Iran’s core positions and claimed that diplomatic progress would soon become visible on key issues under discussion.
President Pezeshkian also said that US President Donald Trump, who had previously opposed several Iranian positions, has now accepted certain rights of the Iranian nation in recent discussions.
Referring to the financial arrangement, he said Iran’s $6 billion in frozen funds in Qatar would be returned as part of the agreement framework.
The Iranian president also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that he would be among those most dissatisfied with the ongoing negotiations in Switzerland.
President said that all provisions of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding are in Iran’s favor, adding that the outcomes of ongoing negotiations with the United States will become clear soon.
