Judicial Commission of Pakistan approves rule changes for judges’ appointments, constitutional benches, and forms committee for High Court selections.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - An important meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan was held under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Pakistan, where key decisions were taken regarding judicial appointments and court administration.

The commission approved amendments to the Judges Appointment Rules 2024 and also endorsed the criteria for nomination and selection of judges for constitutional benches.

According to the commission, the procedure for selecting judges for constitutional benches has been further clarified to ensure transparency and consistency.

The meeting deferred a decision on the proposed Judicial Performance Evaluation Rules 2026, aimed at assessing the performance of High Court judges. It was decided to seek feedback from all Chief Justices and senior judges of the High Courts within seven days before finalizing the rules.

The commission also rejected a proposal by the Balochistan Bar Council for new rulemaking, stating that the two-year term of the bar council’s nominated member is constitutionally fixed.

During the meeting, agenda items one, three, and four were approved, and it was decided to form a seven-member committee for the appointment of High Court judges.

The committee will conduct interviews of candidates, while its head will be appointed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

The meeting also reviewed various administrative and legal matters related to the judicial system and took several important decisions.
