ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Thursday stressed that diplomacy remains far more effective than conflict, as he welcomed the Iran-US memorandum as a major breakthrough for regional peace and stability.
Speaking in the National Assembly, Bilawal praised the country’s military and civilian leadership, particularly the Field Marshal and senior officials, for their efforts in enhancing Pakistan’s standing at the international level.
He described the signing of the Iran-US memorandum as a historic development, saying peace creates the foundation for economic growth, stability and employment opportunities for the younger generation. He also commended President Asif Ali Zardari for supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation.
Bilawal warned that despite the ceasefire between Iran and the United States, certain elements still seek to destabilise Pakistan. Referring to threats from India regarding Operation Sindhoor 2, he said national unity remains essential in confronting external challenges. He also noted that Pakistan’s Constitution clearly defines the spending powers of both the federation and the provinces.
The PPP chairman said misinformation had been spread ahead of the federal budget, including claims that the 18th Constitutional Amendment would be rolled back and that the Benazir Income Support Programme would be scrapped. He thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar for addressing these concerns.
Bilawal further stressed that the National Finance Commission framework remains secure, asserting that the provinces’ share under the NFC is protected and no compromise would be made on provincial rights.
He said all national challenges and threats could be tackled collectively, adding that provinces are still not receiving their due share in petroleum levy and other taxes despite repeatedly making sacrifices for national stability.
