Tariq Aziz remains one of the most influential figures in the history of Pakistani television

(Web Desk) - Six years have passed since the death of Pakistan’s iconic television host, actor, writer, poet and politician Tariq Aziz, whose legacy continues to live on in the hearts of millions of fans across the country.

Known for his distinctive voice, eloquent style and deep affection for Pakistan, Tariq Aziz remains one of the most influential figures in the history of Pakistani television.

Born on April 28, 1936 in Jalandhar, he migrated to Pakistan after independence and spent his early life in Sahiwal. He began his professional career at Radio Pakistan Lahore and later became part of the pioneering team of Pakistan Television (PTV) when it launched in 1964, earning the distinction of being its first male announcer.

His immense popularity came with the long-running quiz show “Neelam Ghar” (later renamed Bazm-e-Tariq Aziz), which began in 1975 and made him a household name for decades. His famous opening line, “Dekhti aankhon aur sunte kaanon ko Tariq Aziz ka salam,” became a signature greeting remembered by generations.

Beyond television, he also acted in films, contributed to Urdu literature as a writer and poet, and entered politics, serving as a Member of the National Assembly in 1997. In recognition of his services, he was awarded the Tamgha-e-Husn-e-Karkardagi by the Government of Pakistan in 1992.

On his sixth death anniversary, his wife Dr. Hajra paid tribute and urged the government to introduce a Tariq Aziz Award to honour his legacy and introduce his work and contributions to younger generations.

Tariq Aziz passed away on June 17, 2020 at the age of 84, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Pakistani media history. His patriotic slogan “Pakistan Zindabad” continues to resonate with audiences nationwide.
