Nepra receives request for Rs0.82 per unit hike in power tariff

Updated on:

The adjustment could impose an additional burden of approximately Rs12 billion on electricity consumers nationwide

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - A request to increase electricity tariffs by Rs0.82 per unit for consumers across Pakistan has been submitted to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism.

According to NEPRA, the application was filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) for the fuel price adjustment for May 2026.

The regulator has scheduled a hearing on the petition for June 30 to review the proposed increase.

Sources said that if approved, the adjustment could impose an additional burden of approximately Rs12 billion on electricity consumers nationwide.

According to the CPPA, the average fuel cost of electricity generation during May stood at Rs9.25 per unit, forming the basis of the requested tariff adjustment.

Fuel cost adjustments are routinely reviewed by NEPRA to account for fluctuations in fuel prices and changes in the electricity generation mix. Any approved increase would be reflected in consumers' future electricity bills, subject to applicable regulatory decisions.
