ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to expedite work on the 100-megawatt solar energy project in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The directive was issued during a review meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on the solar energy project in Gilgit-Baltistan. Concerned officials were briefed on the federal government's solar initiative in the region.
During the meeting, the prime minister said that the federal government would bear all costs of the project aimed at providing 100 megawatts of solar power to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
He also instructed authorities to complete the project as soon as possible and ensure transparency at every stage of the project through independent third-party evaluation.
The briefing stated that an 18 megawatt solar energy project has been planned for government buildings in the region. In the Gilgit and Diamir divisions, this project is scheduled for completion by December 2026. The solarization of government buildings in the Baltistan district is expected to be completed by October 2026.
The briefing further stated that work is also underway on an 82-megawatt solar energy project for households in Gilgit, Skardu, Chilas and Khaplu.
The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including the Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Minister for Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs Amir Muqam.
