LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Punjab government has decided to end the free travel facility being provided on metro, Orange Line Train, SpeedO, electric and green bus services across the province.
According to the Punjab Mass Transit Authority, the decision comes despite no significant reduction in petroleum product prices, leading the government to withdraw the transport subsidy. From June 13, passengers travelling on mass transit systems across Punjab will have to pay regular fares.
Officials said the free travel facility was introduced in April 2026 under a public relief package and was initially announced for one month. However, its extension was later considered and relevant recommendations were prepared before the final decision to discontinue it.
According to official figures, nearly 800,000 passengers were benefiting daily from the free travel facility across metro, Orange Line, SpeedO and green bus services. Of these, around 290,000 passengers used the Orange Line Train daily, while over 100,000 travelled on the metro bus service without fare.
The government had introduced the subsidy to ease the impact of inflation and rising petroleum prices, but after its withdrawal, passengers will now once again be required to pay the prescribed fares.
