(Web Desk) – Pakistan created history by winning the Diamond Jubilee Four-Nation International Football Tournament, defeating Afghanistan 2-0 in the final held in the Maldives.
The national side took the lead in the 24th minute when Shaiq Dost found the back of the net with a well-taken finish. Pakistan maintained control for much of the match and added a second goal in extra time, ending Afghanistan’s hopes of a comeback and securing the championship.
The victory marks a major milestone for Pakistan football, with the national team claiming an international tournament title after a wait of 74 years.
Pakistan had last reached the final of the Merdeka Cup in 1962, making this achievement one of the most significant in the country's football history.
Pakistan enjoyed an impressive unbeaten run throughout the competition. In the group stage, the team recorded victories over hosts Maldives and Afghanistan, while their match against Bangladesh ended in a draw.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif felicitated the team on winning the title. In a post on X, he wrote: “Heartiest congratulations to Pakistan’s football team on winning the 2026 Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament in the Maldives. Their impressive victory over Afghanistan in the final has brought pride and joy to the entire nation”.
“Wishing our talented players continued success in the future,” he said.
