Pakistan braces for intense heatwave as temperatures expected to rise further

Pakistan faces an intensifying heatwave, with temperatures expected to remain 4–7°C above normal through June 12

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast predominantly hot and dry weather across most parts of the country over the next 24 hours, with severe heat expected in the plains.

According to the weather report, isolated rain and thunderstorms are likely in Kashmir and adjoining mountainous regions, while the rest of the country will remain largely dry.

The PMD has also issued a heatwave alert, warning that temperatures are expected to rise gradually across most plain areas of Pakistan between June 9 and June 12.

Officials said daytime temperatures in the upper parts of the country could remain 4°C to 6°C above normal, while southern and lower regions may experience temperatures 5°C to 7°C higher than seasonal averages.

Weather conditions remained extremely hot in many areas on Sunday. The highest temperature was recorded in Sibi at 49°C.

Other major readings included 48°C in Dadu and Noorpur Thal, while 47°C was recorded in Jacobabad, Sukkur, Khairpur, Turbat and Mohenjo-daro.

Among major cities, temperatures reached 46°C in Dera Ghazi Khan, 45°C in Bahawalpur and Multan, 43°C in Lahore and Faisalabad, 42°C in Peshawar, and 40°C in Islamabad and Muzaffarabad.

Authorities have advised the public to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and take precautionary measures as the heatwave intensifies.
