Iran condemns US 'flagrant ceasefire violation' after coastal radar strikes

Updated on:

Iran and the United States exchange strikes and accusations after radar sites are hit and missiles are fired across the Gulf, raising fears over a fragile ceasefire.

TEHRAN/WASHINGTON (Agencies) – Iran has strongly condemned a US nighttime strike on coastal radar installations in the Gulf, describing it as a “flagrant” violation of a ceasefire that has been in place since April.

The Foreign Ministry said the attack targeted “national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic” and accused Washington of “hostile and provocative behaviour”. It warned that the United States would bear responsibility for any consequences or further escalation arising from what it called unlawful actions.

The escalation came as tensions between the two sides intensified following a series of military exchanges linked to the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched attacks on US bases in the region in response to earlier strikes and incidents involving shipping traffic. These included reported confrontations near Sirik and Qeshm Island, as well as the targeting of oil tankers attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without coordination, according to dpa.

Washington, however, said it intercepted most incoming projectiles and rejected claims that facilities linked to the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain had been hit. The US military also said it had downed Iranian drones launched towards the Strait of Hormuz.

According to US Central Command (United States Central Command), seven ballistic missiles were fired towards Kuwait and Bahrain late on Friday night following the drone interceptions. It said six of the missiles were intercepted, while the seventh did not reach its target.

The command also stated that Iranian drones had been shot down after being launched towards the strategic waterway, underscoring the rapid exchange of fire across the Gulf.

Kuwait and Bahrain both condemned the missile and drone launches, calling them violations of sovereignty and threats to regional security. Egypt, Jordan and Qatar also issued condemnations on Saturday.

The US military said it carried out strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites in Goruk and on Qeshm Island, describing the action as a defensive measure aimed at preventing further attacks.

Iran’s IRGC said its response was triggered by earlier US military activity, including what it described as an attempt to escort oil tankers through contested waters. It maintained that US operations had escalated tensions and justified its retaliatory strikes.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry reiterated that the US attack on radar and surveillance facilities constituted a breach of the ceasefire and said it demonstrated Washington had no intention of reducing regional tensions, while cautioning that continued actions would “seriously endanger the security of the region”.
