Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed environmental commitment on World Environment Day, urging plastic reduction, tree plantation, and stricter anti-smog measures across Punjab

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif reiterated her government’s commitment to environmental protection, reduction of plastic pollution, and expansion of tree plantation drives across the province.

In a message on the World Environment Day, she called on citizens to actively participate in safeguarding natural resources and planting more trees to support a cleaner and greener Punjab.

The chief minister praised Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb and the relevant teams for improvements in environmental conditions, particularly in Lahore and other regions. She also expressed gratitude over the noticeable reduction in smog during the previous year and overall improvements in air quality.

She directed authorities to continue strict legal action against the use of substandard plastic bags and to accelerate the completion of Punjab’s first Environment Observatory project. She emphasized that protecting the planet is a shared responsibility and essential for its survival.

CM Maryam Nawaz stated that positive results were emerging from sustained efforts to reduce environmental pollution and combat smog. She highlighted that Punjab has become the first province in the region to develop a predictive early warning system for environmental pollution.

She added that advanced air quality forecasting systems are now being used to monitor pollution levels across the province. A 24/7 monitoring system has also been activated through the province’s first “Environment Wall,” tracking data from environmental agencies in real time.

The chief minister further noted that strict enforcement actions are underway against vehicles emitting excessive smoke, brick kilns violating regulations, and the burning of crop residues. She said that 30 modern anti-smog guns are currently being used effectively, while additional units are being procured for major cities including Lahore.

She also pointed out that tree plantation campaigns are ongoing across Punjab under the “Green Punjab” and “Plant for Pakistan” initiatives. She stressed that environmental cleanliness and protection are also emphasized in religious and moral teachings.

Concluding her message, the chief minister urged the public to reduce the use of plastic and take collective responsibility for environmental conservation, especially for the sake of future generations, while raising awareness about climate change and environmental protection on World Environment Day.
