Bangladesh FM elected president of 81st UN General Assembly

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman won election as president of the 81st UN General Assembly, defeating Cyprus' candidate.

NEW YORK (Dunya News) - Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has been elected president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, marking a significant diplomatic achievement for Bangladesh on the global stage.

The election was held at United Nations headquarters in New York, where Khalilur Rahman defeated Cyprus candidate Andreas S. Kakouris. According to reports, the Bangladeshi candidate secured 99 votes against 91 for his Cypriot rival.

Observers described the outcome as a reflection of Bangladesh's growing diplomatic influence, commitment to multilateral cooperation, and expanding role within international institutions.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman congratulated Khalilur Rahman on his election, saying the victory represented international recognition of Bangladesh's increasing global influence and constructive engagement in world affairs.

In his congratulatory message, the prime minister expressed confidence that Khalilur Rahman would effectively represent Bangladesh while promoting dialogue, international cooperation, and collective efforts to address global challenges.

Khalilur Rahman is expected to assume the presidency when the 81st session of the UN General Assembly begins in September 2026 and will serve a one-year term.
