Pakistan look to win series, Australia bid for comeback in second ODI

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Pakistan will aim to seal the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series when they take on Australia in the second match at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday, with the contest scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. The visitors, meanwhile, will be eager to bounce back after losing the opening game and keep the series alive.

Pakistan secured a five-wicket victory in the first ODI in Rawalpindi, thanks largely to an outstanding debut performance by 21-year-old spinner Arafat Minhas, who claimed five wickets with his left-arm orthodox bowling. The spin-friendly surface troubled Australia's batting lineup, exposing their difficulties against turning deliveries as Pakistan's slow bowlers accounted for eight wickets.

Conditions in Lahore, however, have traditionally favoured batters and produced several high-scoring matches in recent years. Australia successfully chased 352 against England during last year's Champions Trophy, while Pakistan posted 349 against Australia at the same venue in 2022.

The nature of the pitch for Tuesday's encounter has become a key topic of discussion. With the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia approaching, some experts believe Pakistan should prepare for conditions likely to be encountered in southern Africa rather than relying heavily on spin-friendly home surfaces.

Australia are expected to strengthen their side with the return of leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who missed the opening match due to a neck issue. However, the visitors are still without several senior players, including Mitchell Marsh.

Pakistan batter Muhammad Ghazi Ghori said strong performances that help the team succeed naturally boost a player's confidence. He also said batting alongside Babar Azam creates confidence rather than pressure, adding that he is not replacing Mohammad Rizwan, who remains the team's first-choice player.
