SEHWAN (Dunya News) – Manchar Lake, the country’s largest freshwater lake, is rapidly drying up, raising serious environmental and livelihood concerns.
Due to a sharp decline in water levels, nearly two kilometers of the lake area has turned into barren land. The reduction in water has also pushed several fish species to the brink of extinction.
Officials report that the water level in Manchar Lake has dropped to 106 RL, equivalent to around six feet.
The surrounding areas have also turned dry, causing severe difficulties for local farmers. More than 30,000 residents of the region have been deprived of both drinking and agricultural water.
Angry residents staged a protest at the Manchar embankment, demanding urgent restoration of the lake and its water supply.
Fishermen said the shrinking water has destroyed fish breeding, putting their livelihoods at risk. With the lake drying, boat operations have stopped and tourist activity has also come to an end.
