Punjab has notified Labour Code 2026, extending legal protection to gig, contract, domestic and digital workers under a unified labour law framework

LAHORE (Dunya News) - The Government of Punjab has officially issued the notification of the Punjab Labour Code 2026, introducing a comprehensive legal framework for workers across multiple sectors including contract employees, gig workers, and digital platform-based labour.

According to the official notification, the new labour law has been enforced across the province after approval by the Governor of Punjab and publication in the official gazette, consolidating multiple existing labour laws into a single unified code.

The Punjab Labour Code 2026 introduces a strengthened legal structure against forced labour, bonded labour, and child labour, ensuring stricter enforcement mechanisms and enhanced worker protection.

For the first time, workers engaged in food delivery services, app-based platforms, and ride-hailing services have been formally included under labour legislation, granting them legal recognition and protection.

The law also extends coverage to individuals working online or from home, bringing remote and digital workers within the ambit of labour rights.

Under the new framework, it has been made more difficult for employers to deprive contract workers of permanent employment rights, while stronger provisions have been introduced to address workplace harassment, misconduct, and violence.

The code also places restrictions on non-compete clauses that previously prevented employees from joining other companies after leaving a job.

Additionally, provisions have been added to discourage policies that keep employee salaries confidential, aiming to promote transparency in wages across workplaces.

The legislation establishes a uniform labour framework applicable to all sectors, including domestic workers, agricultural labourers, and construction workers, ensuring equal legal protection for all categories of workers.

Officials stated that the Punjab Labour Code 2026 is aligned with international labour standards set by the International Labour Organization and will be applicable across all workplaces in the province.
