Pakistan’s Ishaq Dar has told the UN Security Council that India’s use of water as a weapon is unacceptable, while also highlighting Kashmir, treaty concerns and global tensions.

NEW YORK (Dunya News) – Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has strongly stated that the use of water as a weapon by India is “completely unacceptable”, during a high-level debate at the United Nations Security Council on maintaining international peace and security.

His remarks came as global leaders gathered to discuss growing geopolitical tensions and the need for strengthened adherence to international law. He reiterated Pakistan’s position on multiple longstanding disputes and highlighted the importance of diplomacy in resolving conflicts.

Speaking at the session, Ishaq Dar underlined that the United Nations has granted equal rights to citizens and the right to self-determination under its charter. He said Pakistan remains firmly committed to the principles and framework of the UN Charter and continues to support peaceful resolution of longstanding disputes through dialogue and negotiation. According to him, the responsibility of promoting peace and resolving conflicts lies with states in accordance with international agreements and legal norms.

REGIONAL TENSIONS

Dar also referred to recent escalations in the Middle East, noting that Pakistan has consistently emphasised the importance of dialogue and restraint. He warned that such tensions are not only a threat to regional stability but are also contributing to wider global economic challenges.

He added that Pakistan has made sincere efforts to support de-escalation and expressed gratitude to friendly countries for backing peace-oriented initiatives.

WATER DISPUTE

Reiterating a key point of contention, the Foreign Minister stated that the use of water as a political or strategic tool is unacceptable under any circumstances. He rejected any unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, stressing that such actions cannot be recognised.

Dar also highlighted that the Kashmir dispute has remained unresolved for eight decades, urging the international community to ensure compliance with international laws and agreements while calling for renewed efforts to address long-standing conflicts.
