ISLAMABAD/BEIJING (Dunya News) – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar is set to depart Beijing for New York following a series of high-level engagements in China, where he accompanied Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

The visit formed part of celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China and featured a packed schedule of discussions and official events aimed at further strengthening bilateral ties.

Dar confirmed he would leave Beijing on Sunday night and arrive in New York for a three-day visit from 26 to 28 May, where he is scheduled to participate in key meetings at the United Nations, including an important session of the UN Security Council focused on international peace and security.

The deputy prime minister’s New York visit comes at a time when global diplomatic discussions remain centred on geopolitical tensions, multilateral cooperation and reforms of international institutions. His participation is expected to place Pakistan among active voices in discussions surrounding international security and global governance challenges.

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Dar will take part on 26 May in the United Nations Security Council Open Debate titled “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centred International System.”

The session has been convened under the rotating Presidency of the United Nations Security Council for May 2026 by China and will be chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Pakistan welcomed Beijing’s initiative, describing it as a timely effort that underlines the importance of multilateral cooperation and reinforces the central role of the United Nations in responding to increasingly complex international challenges.

The debate is expected to bring together senior diplomats and representatives from various member states as global powers seek common ground on pressing international issues, including security concerns, conflict resolution and strengthening international institutions.

Before departing China, Dar reflected on the significance of his engagements in Beijing and expressed appreciation to the Chinese leadership and people for hosting Pakistan’s delegation during the anniversary celebrations.

He noted that the visit included productive meetings and interactions held alongside PM Shehbaz Sharif’s engagements with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, highlighting the continued strategic partnership between Islamabad and Beijing.

Dar also extended gratitude to Chinese authorities for arrangements made during the visit and thanked the Pakistani Embassy in Beijing for supporting the delegation throughout the trip.

Pakistan and China marked 75 years of diplomatic relations this year, a milestone reflecting decades of political, strategic and economic cooperation. Relations between the two countries have frequently been described by leaders as an enduring partnership built on mutual trust and long-standing friendship.

During his stay in New York, Dar is also expected to participate in a meeting of the Group of Friends on Global Governance on 28 May. The gathering will take place under the theme “Reforming and Improving Global Governance, Working Together to Address Global Challenges.”

The meeting is expected to focus on international cooperation and discussions on reforming global systems to better respond to emerging challenges facing nations worldwide.

Beyond official sessions at the United Nations, Dar’s itinerary also includes a series of sideline meetings with foreign ministers from various countries and senior United Nations officials. These engagements are expected to provide opportunities for discussions on regional developments, diplomatic cooperation and broader international matters.

Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to multilateral diplomacy and collective international efforts aimed at promoting peace, stability and sustainable development. Officials said the country remains prepared to contribute constructively to global discussions and partnerships through international platforms.
