DOHA/ISLAMABAD (Reuters/Dunya News) - A Qatari negotiating team arrived in Tehran on Friday in coordination with United States to help secure a deal to end the war with Iran and resolve outstanding issues, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Friday.
Doha, which has worked as a mediator in the Gaza war and other areas of international tensions, had till now distanced itself from playing a mediation role in the Iran war after it came under attack from Iranian missiles and drones during the latest conflict.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir has departed for Iran on an official visit, according to security sources.
During the visit, he will hold meetings with senior Iranian officials.
Sources said the discussions are likely to focus on US-Iran talks and other matters of mutual interest, the regional situation, and areas of bilateral cooperation.
The visit is being viewed as an important development in the context of diplomatic and security ties between Pakistan and Iran.
Previously, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also visited Iran, where he held meetings with his Iranian counterpart and other senior leaders.
Naqvi has visited Iran twice within 24 hours, engaging in meetings with senior Iranian leadership.
Yesterday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated during a press briefing that hopes have emerged for a breakthrough in talks with Iran, adding that Pakistan’s mediation delegation is expected to visit Iran.
Sharing that a Pakistani delegation is travelling to Iran for discussions on a ceasefire draft, Rubio noted that recent talks have shown positive signals and limited progress. The situation, he added, is expected to become clearer in the coming days.
