LONDON (Web Desk) – Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir has officially obtained British citizenship and has also been issued a British passport, according to media reports.
Following the development, Amir has technically become eligible to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where Pakistani nationals are currently barred from playing.
Reports said the left-arm pacer had been living in the United Kingdom for several years with his British-born wife Nargis Khan and their children. After completing all legal formalities and residency requirements, he has now formally acquired British nationality.
On Wednesday, Amir also reshared a social media post from a user congratulating him on receiving British citizenship.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has maintained restrictions on Pakistani players participating in the IPL for years. However, former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood was previously able to feature in the league after obtaining British citizenship.
With his new passport, Amir is now technically eligible to play in the IPL, and reports suggest he may consider participating if he receives an offer from a franchise.
The former Pakistan pacer has publicly expressed his desire to play in the IPL on several occasions in the past.
