KARACHI (Dunya News) - JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has announced nationwide protests from May 22, saying democracy appears to be failing across the world.

Speaking at the Karachi Press Club’s “Meet the Press” program, Fazlur Rehman said the law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan had reached alarming levels.

He said various speculations were circulating in the country, while the rulers did not appear serious about maintaining peace and order.

The JUI-F chief said powerful circles were influencing parliament and the government, adding that the Constitution had been distorted and the country’s condition had become extremely dire.

Fazlur Rehman said the rulers were burdening poor citizens with rising inflation and urged them to abandon such policies.

Although people formally had the right to vote, questions were raised over the transparency of elections every time, he added.

The JUI-F chief said his party had previously postponed protests in light of the prevailing circumstances, adding that they understood both the national situation and the responsibilities of the government.

Fazlur Rehman said protecting the Constitution was the responsibility of the people and urged all stakeholders to work together to improve the country’s economy.

He added that democracy appeared to be failing not only in Pakistan but across the world.
