No increase in electricity prices for June after timely measures, says Power Division

Power Division says no electricity price increase in June, saving consumers from fuel adjustment hikes while offering potential relief through stable tariffs and policy measures.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Pakistan’s Power Division has announced that electricity prices will not increase in June, citing timely and effective measures taken to shield consumers from rising costs.

A spokesperson for the Power Division said that consumers have been protected from an additional burden of Rs5 to Rs6 per unit that could have resulted from monthly fuel price adjustments. Despite challenges such as reduced LNG availability and reliance on more expensive furnace oil, authorities ensured that no extra cost would be passed on to consumers.

The spokesperson added that the government successfully saved electricity users from a potential financial impact of around Rs38 billion. Monthly fuel adjustment charges were capped at an increase of Rs1.73 per unit, preventing a sharper rise in tariffs.

Officials credited consistent policy measures, rising electricity demand and special relief packages for stabilising prices. Increased supply of domestic gas and enhanced generation from imported coal-based power plants also helped reduce load management and maintain supply.

In addition, quarterly adjustments played a significant role in providing relief. During the first quarter, electricity consumers received refunds amounting to Rs65 billion, translating into a relief of Rs1.93 per unit.

The spokesperson noted that these quarterly adjustments not only offset the effects of monthly fuel price variations but also provided additional relief despite challenging economic conditions.

Looking ahead, the Power Division confirmed that there will be no increase in the reference tariff for the coming month. Instead, consumers may benefit from a further reduction of around Rs0.20 per unit.
