ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed optimism over a second round of direct talks between the United States and Iran, saying Pakistan remains committed to supporting efforts for lasting regional peace.
In an interview with British newspaper The Sunday Times, the prime minister said Pakistan is being recognised globally as an honest mediator trusted by world leaders.
He described the current period as one of the brightest moments in Pakistan’s history and said the entire nation takes pride in the country’s growing diplomatic standing.
Shehbaz Sharif said peace cannot be achieved easily and requires patience, wisdom and difficult decision-making. He added that Pakistan is continuing efforts to facilitate another round of negotiations in Islamabad aimed at securing durable peace.
The prime minister said the close coordination between Pakistan’s political and military leadership has significantly improved the country’s global image. He added that Iran, the United States and Gulf countries all trust Pakistan’s diplomatic role.

Highlighting Pakistan’s strategic importance, he pointed to the country’s close ties with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, as well as its long border with Iran and proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies.
He warned that any disruption in the region could increase oil prices and create economic challenges for Pakistan.
Shehbaz Sharif also praised Asim Munir for his role in diplomatic efforts, saying his contributions would be remembered in history. He also acknowledged the efforts of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar for maintaining continuous diplomatic engagement.
Referring to tensions between Pakistan and India last year, the prime minister claimed that international intervention helped avert a major regional disaster.
On security challenges, he said Pakistan is facing a renewed wave of terrorism involving outlawed groups, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the Baloch Liberation Army.
The prime minister described operations against militant hideouts in Afghanistan as unavoidable, saying Pakistan repeatedly conveyed peace messages to Kabul but could not remain silent while innocent citizens and security personnel were being targeted.
He reiterated that Pakistan seeks peaceful relations with Afghanistan and only expects assurances that Afghan territory will not be used by militant groups against Pakistan.
Shehbaz Sharif concluded by saying that eliminating terrorism from Pakistan remains an unwavering national commitment and stressed that the country is fighting this battle not only for itself but for the wider world.
