More than 100 houses set ablaze in Jacobabad over love marriage dispute

The groom’s father, Malhar Buriro, alleged that around 400 armed men took part in the attack

JACOBABAD (Dunya News) - More than 100 houses were set on fire in Jacobabad following a violent clash triggered by a dispute over a love marriage between members of two communities.

According to reports, Sidra from the Channa community married Muhammad Hassan Buriro of the Buriro community by choice. The couple, in a video statement, said they had solemnised their marriage at a court in Hyderabad on May 4 and later faced threats and allegations.

They appealed to authorities for protection, saying they were being harassed after the marriage.

Local residents said armed men attacked a village belonging to the Buriro community, opened fire, and set multiple houses on fire, leaving families homeless and forcing them to live in the open.

Police said a case has been registered against 32 suspects, and five have been arrested so far. The FIR includes charges under the Anti-Terrorism Act, while raids are continuing to arrest remaining suspects.

Senior Superintendent of Police Faizan Ali said investigations are underway and efforts are being made to apprehend all accused individuals.

The groom’s father, Malhar Buriro, alleged that around 400 armed men took part in the attack, questioning why the entire village was targeted.

On the other hand, representatives of the Channa community denied involvement, claiming that a minor girl had been abducted from their area and that they would pursue the matter in court.

A video statement from the girl’s father also surfaced, in which he alleged that his 14-year-old daughter was married in violation of the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act and claimed that two of his daughters had been abducted and not recovered.

Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the incident, calling it an “inhuman and intolerable act” and directing police and administration to take strict action against those involved while ensuring relief for affected families.
