LAHORE (Dunya News) - The Punjab government has approved the establishment of a local Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform under its Government GPU Cloud initiative, marking a major step towards digital governance and technological modernisation in the province.
According to officials, the project aims to strengthen local AI development by enabling large language models (LLMs) to be hosted and trained within Pakistan instead of relying on foreign cloud services.
The initiative will also support Urdu and other regional languages, helping expand AI accessibility for local users and institutions.
Under the plan, government departments and universities will be provided with a secure AI sandbox to test and develop applications in a controlled environment.
Officials said early trials involving voice interfaces and intelligent search systems have already shown positive results.
The Punjab government believes the project will improve the efficiency of public services while ensuring sensitive official data remains protected within local infrastructure.
Authorities noted that transferring confidential government data to foreign cloud platforms poses security risks, while the lack of modern GPU infrastructure has remained a major hurdle in implementing advanced AI projects in Pakistan.
Officials added that the Punjab government currently delivers services to more than 130 million citizens across over 50 sectors, with more than one million employees working in the public sector.
