Pakistan Railways turns profitable after eliminating Rs8bn losses in two years

Updated on:

Pakistan Railways posted Rs2.41bn profit in 2024–25, eliminating Rs8bn losses in two years, driven by higher passenger and freight revenues, marking historic financial recovery.

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Pakistan Railways has turned into a profit-making entity after eliminating losses exceeding Rs8 billion within two years, according to the Ministry of Railways.

In a written reply submitted during the National Assembly’s question hour, the ministry revealed that Pakistan Railways earned a profit of Rs2.41 billion in the fiscal year 2024–25. This marks the second consecutive year the department has posted profits — a first in its history.

The statement noted that the organisation had suffered a loss of Rs8.46 billion in 2022–23, but consistent improvements in revenue streams have reversed its financial trajectory.

According to the details, Pakistan Railways generated total revenue of Rs93.60 billion, while expenditures stood at Rs91.18 billion during the reported period.

Officials attributed the improved financial performance to increased earnings from both passenger and freight operations. The ministry added that total revenue has surpassed Rs93 billion for the first time, signalling a significant milestone in the institution’s recovery.

Despite the turnaround, the ministry emphasised that further steps are under way to strengthen the financial stability of Pakistan Railways and ensure sustainable growth in the coming years.
