BEIJING (Web Desk) - China has confirmed that US President Donald Trump will visit Beijing on an official trip from May 13 to 15, where he is scheduled to hold key meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
According to a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, the visit is taking place at the invitation of President Xi Jinping.
Discussions between the two leaders are expected to cover the situation in Iran, trade tensions, Taiwan, and other global issues.
Reports suggest that during the visit, President Trump will seek to increase pressure on China regarding Iran, particularly over the purchase of Iranian oil.
China remains one of the largest buyers of Iranian crude oil, while the United States continues efforts to intensify economic pressure on Tehran.
White House officials have described the trip as a highly significant symbolic and diplomatic visit.
US officials said President Trump is not traveling to China merely for ceremonial meetings, but also to pursue new trade agreements and economic benefits for the United States.
The visit will mark President Trump’s first trip to China during his second term in office.
His visit had previously been expected in March or April, but was postponed due to the situation surrounding the Iran conflict.
According to the White House, President Trump will also visit Beijing’s historic Temple of Heaven during the trip, and a state banquet will be hosted in his honour.
It will be the first visit to China by a US president since 2017.
