PTCL warns of internet slowdown due to submarine cable maintenance

Updated on:

PTCL warns of nationwide internet slowdown from May 11–18 due to submarine cable maintenance, with peak-hour disruptions expected as Pakistan advances towards 5G rollout.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Internet users of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) across the country may experience slower connectivity as the company has scheduled maintenance on an international submarine cable from May 11 to May 18.

In a statement shared on social media, PTCL said the maintenance is being carried out to repair a fault in coordination with an international cable consortium, which could temporarily affect service quality.

The company noted that the activity will begin on May 11, 2026, and may continue until May 18, 2026, warning customers of possible service disruption during this period.

According to PTCL, users may particularly face internet degradation during evening hours when network usage typically peaks.

The telecom provider apologised for the inconvenience, stating that efforts are being made to minimise disruption throughout the maintenance window.

This marks the second such slowdown in recent weeks, as PTCL had previously conducted similar maintenance work between April 14 and April 20.

Separately, Pakistan has recently made progress towards next-generation connectivity, with telecom operators beginning limited rollout of 5G services after receiving spectrum licences at a ceremony addressed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Earlier, the government successfully concluded a spectrum auction in Islamabad, generating $507 million through the sale of 480 megahertz of spectrum, including the 2,600MHz band considered crucial for enabling 5G services.
