US Treasury warns firms over Iran Strait fees

Updated on:

US warned firms against paying Iran Strait fees, announced new sanctions targeting Iranian and some Chinese entities.

WASHINGTON (Dunya News) - The US Treasury Department has warned that any shipping company paying fees to Iran for passing through the Strait of Hormuz will face strict sanctions.

According to foreign media reports, the department said it was aware of Iranian threats to navigation in the strait and demands for transit fees.

It added that organisations donating to entities such as the Iranian Red Crescent Society could also face sanctions.

The warning comes after Tehran reportedly proposed imposing fees on vessels transiting the strait as part of broader proposals related to ending tensions with Israel and the United States.

The US Treasury also announced new sanctions targeting six individuals, 21 companies and one vessel linked to Iran.

US officials further said sanctions had been imposed on certain Chinese companies and individuals, though details were not disclosed.
