Transport subsidy extended for another month to ease public burden

Government extends transport subsidy for one month to support commuters and control fares, aiming to ease inflation impact and ensure relief reaches deserving segments.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a one-month extension in the subsidy provided to motorcyclists, public transport, and goods transport sectors in view of the prevailing economic conditions.

The decision aims to provide relief to lower- and middle-income groups facing rising transportation costs. The subsidy, initially introduced last month, will continue to support daily commuters as well as logistics operators.

According to official sources, the prime minister also directed authorities to ensure that fares for public transport and freight charges for goods carriers are not increased during this period. He stressed the importance of strict monitoring mechanisms so that the benefits of the subsidy reach the intended segments of society.

Officials noted that the move is part of broader efforts by the government to cushion the impact of inflation and maintain affordability in essential services. By extending financial support to transport sectors, the government seeks to stabilise travel costs and prevent a ripple effect on the prices of goods.

The subsidy is particularly significant for motorcyclists, who represent a large portion of daily commuters in Pakistan, as well as for public transport users who rely on affordable travel options.

Similarly, maintaining controlled freight rates is expected to help keep the cost of essential commodities in check, as transportation plays a key role in the supply chain.

The prime minister emphasised that effective implementation remains critical, directing relevant departments to ensure transparency and accountability in disbursing the subsidy.
