Punjab to introduce smart patrol cars to detect fake number plates, e-challan defaulters

Punjab Police plans to roll out smart patrol vans equipped with 360-degree cameras and Safe Cities integration to detect fake plates, e-challan defaulters and offenders.

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Punjab Police has decided to introduce smart patrol vehicles equipped with advanced surveillance technology to detect fake number plates, e-challan defaulters and proclaimed offenders on roads across the province.

According to police officials, the “Police Eye Smart Van” is in the final stages of development and will be deployed for automated monitoring on highways and in public spaces. The initiative is aimed at strengthening law enforcement, improving traffic management and enhancing the detection of wanted suspects.

Officials said the smart van would be fitted with 360-degree cameras capable of real-time surveillance while on the move. The system will reportedly identify defaulter vehicles and proclaimed offenders instantly in public areas, enabling swift alerts and response.

The smart patrol vehicles will also be integrated with the Safe Cities Authority system to generate immediate alerts. Police said the cameras would be able to capture and update details of vehicles and citizens within a 100-metre range, while overloaded vehicles could also be identified at the click of a button.

Authorities believe the technology will significantly improve monitoring capabilities and help enforce traffic regulations more effectively.

Police officials further said electric vehicles would be procured for the Police Eye fleet in a move aimed at reducing fuel costs and supporting energy efficiency. The first prototype is expected to be completed next week and presented to Punjab Chief Minister for approval.

The project is being supervised by Additional Inspector General Logistics and Procurement Fawaduddin Qureshi, who is overseeing the completion of the vehicle’s development.

Following approval from the chief minister, the first smart van is expected to be deployed on model roads in Lahore, while between one and three such vehicles may be allocated to each district across Punjab for monitoring purposes.

Officials estimated that each vehicle, including accessories and equipment, would cost around Rs110 million.

Police expressed confidence that the launch of the smart vans would help improve traffic flow, support action against offenders and strengthen efforts to apprehend proclaimed criminals.

The initiative comes as authorities increasingly turn to technology-driven policing solutions to modernise law enforcement and improve road safety in Punjab.
