Airspace closure raises operational costs for Indian airlines

Pakistan airspace closure increases costs for Indian airlines as longer routes and refueling needs affect operations, with experts noting continued adjustments in aviation routes

SRINAGAR (Dunya News) - Following the Pahalgam incident, the closure of Pakistani airspace has significantly impacted Indian aviation operations, increasing operational challenges for airlines.

According to security sources, the closure has resulted in longer flight durations and higher daily operational costs for Indian carriers. Flights from India to the United States and Europe are now required to use longer and more expensive routes.

Due to the extended routes, Indian flights are also required to make additional refueling stops in other countries, adding to operational complexities and costs.

Sources indicated that the continued airspace closure could result in annual losses of up to $800 million for Indian airlines.

Experts noted that the evolving situation has led to increased operational adjustments, and further continuation of airspace restrictions may require Indian airlines to reconsider certain international routes.

They added that Pakistan’s response to recent developments reflects its position as a responsible state in managing regional aviation and security dynamics.
