PESHAWAR (Dunya News) – In a landmark development, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Prisons Department has appointed a transgender individual to its prison police for the first time.
According to official details, Sobia Khan, also known as Bebo, has been inducted as a warder under Scale 7, marking a significant step towards inclusivity in the province’s law enforcement sector.
Authorities confirmed that Sobia Khan has been recruited under the designated quota, reflecting the government’s commitment to providing equal employment opportunities to marginalised communities.
Following the appointment, she is expected to be posted either at the Peshawar Central Jail or at the department’s headquarters, depending on administrative requirements.
Officials described the move as a progressive initiative aimed at promoting diversity and representation within the public sector. The inclusion of transgender individuals in government institutions has been increasingly encouraged in recent years as part of broader social reforms.
The appointment is being seen as a milestone for the transgender community in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where employment opportunities have historically been limited.
Observers note that such steps not only provide economic empowerment but also help challenge social stigma, paving the way for greater acceptance and integration of transgender individuals into mainstream society.
