LAHORE (Dunya News) – World Earth Day is being observed across the globe, including Pakistan, today (Wednesday). Earth Day is a global event that works to encourage and raise awareness of climate change and environment protection.

Earth Day was first observed on April 22, 1970, in the United States and Canada In 1990, the day was declared an international celebration. Its aim is to bring people around the world together in defense of nature and the environment.

As an annual global event, it marks a commitment to environmental protection and sustainability. The 2026 theme is “Our Power, Our Planet,” focusing on accelerating clean energy, community climate solutions, and environmental accountability.

This theme focuses on leveraging collective action to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, aiming to triple global clean electricity by 2030, defend environmental protections, and mobilize citizens through advocacy.

This year’s campaign theme calls on communities around the world to take action in support of clean air, clean water, clean energy, protected natural resources, and climate stability.

In today’s world, environmental protection is under pressure across the globe because of economic stress, conflicts, climate impacts, and shifting political priorities. Environmental policies affect the costs borne by households, local authorities, and national economies, influencing utility prices, agricultural productivity, disaster recovery spending, and public health systems. That is why engaging local communities provides a mechanism for maintaining continuity and accountability when institutional capacity varies.

Earth Day has remained one of the leading global campaigns for raising awareness and prompting action on critical environmental issues.

The strength of this movement lies in its mass nature. It is the collective voice of communities that pushes governments and corporations to make bold commitments and take decisive action. By engaging in public initiatives and making sustainable choices in their daily lives, people become the catalysts for change.

Collective action is measured in improvements in public health, ecosystem stability, and economic resilience across regions. Earth Day’s global legacy demonstrates the ability of people to work together across borders to protect the planet’s shared resources.
