ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The government has officially ended the facility of free electricity units for power sector employees.
According to reports, the decision follows a ruling by the Lahore High Court, which accepted a petition filed by the Power Division regarding the removal of the benefit.
Federal Minister for Power Division Owais Leghari welcomed the court’s decision, calling it a major reform step in the country’s energy sector.
In a post on X, he stated that for the first time in Pakistan’s history, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, free electricity units benefit for power sector employees have been abolished.
He added that the abolition of this facility fulfills a long-standing public demand and reflects an important policy shift aimed at improving transparency and reducing financial burden on the national power system.
The minister further said that the government will continue implementing reforms in the energy sector in the public interest and will pursue all measures necessary for the country’s overall economic stability.
Owais Leghari said that government will take every step necessary for the collective betterment of the country.
