Petrol shortage hits Pakistan; govt vows strict action against hoarding

Petrol shortages emerge across Pakistan amid rising demand; dealers allege under-supply, while the government assures ample reserves and warns against illegal hoarding.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Petrol shortages have begun appearing at fuel stations across Pakistan, raising concerns among consumers and petroleum dealers.

Speaking at a press conference, Abdul Sami Khan, Chairman of the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association, said demand for petrol surged suddenly, causing scarcity at multiple fuel pumps. He urged the government to remove petroleum levies and taxes, warning that further price increases would severely affect low-income groups and motorcyclists.

Khan also claimed that people are buying petrol in large quantities from pumps and accused the government of falsely claiming sufficient petroleum reserves. Dealers are reportedly receiving 50 percent less fuel than their average sales, he added, warning that unrest and disputes have started at petrol stations. He cautioned that the situation could escalate if the government continues with proposed price hikes, potentially leading to law-and-order issues.

In response, the government assured the public that ample petroleum reserves are available to meet national demand. The Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) urged citizens not to pay attention to rumors and avoid unnecessary purchases or stockpiling.

Authorities have been directed to take strict legal action against individuals or entities involved in illegal hoarding, especially outside licensed oil depots and retail outlets. Provincial chief secretaries have been instructed to mobilize deputy commissioners to inspect, seal illegal storage sites, and ensure supply stability.

OGRA teams are actively monitoring oil depots and retail outlets to maintain continuous supply and prevent irregularities or corruption. The government emphasized that all measures are in place to ensure public access to petroleum products and prevent market manipulation.
