MUZAFFARABAD (Dunya News) - The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission has been unable to issue the schedule for the election of the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The Election Commission has written a letter to the Secretary of the Legislative Assembly, stating that the communication received regarding the election did not include directives
from the competent authority. According to the Secretary of the Election Commission, under the Constitution, in the event of the President’s demise and the office falling vacant, the Speaker of the Assembly is bound to hold an election within 30 days.
The letter further stated that the Chief Election Commissioner assumed office after taking oath on February 20, 2026, and under electoral laws, conducting and supervising the election of the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir falls within the jurisdiction of the Election Commission.

The Commission clarified that the constitutional timeframe is linked to the date on which the notification declaring the office vacant is issued.
However, the notification regarding the vacancy of the President’s office was not attached with the communication sent to the Commission.
The Secretary of the Election Commission has requested clarification from the competent authority to ensure that the electoral process proceeds strictly in accordance with the Constitution and law, with full legal cover.
