NEW DELHI (Web Desk) - Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has been granted bail in a long-running cheque bounce case and has been released from jail.

The popular comedian, known for delivering dozens of blockbuster comedy films in Bollywood, secured relief in a case that has been ongoing since 2010.

After facing prolonged legal troubles in connection with the matter, the actor was finally granted conditional bail, reportedly following support from members of the film industry.

Earlier, the court had directed Rajpal Yadav to surrender at Tihar Jail in the first week of February for repeatedly violating the terms of a court-approved settlement agreement.

Last week, a Delhi court had rejected his bail plea, observing that he had failed to pay approximately Rs90 million (around Rs9 crore).

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma had clarified that Yadav’s imprisonment was not merely procedural, but the result of his failure to comply with the terms of a voluntary settlement agreement.

However, on Monday (February 16), the actor was granted bail subject to certain conditions, providing him temporary relief.

What is the case about?

The case dates back to 2010, when Rajpal Yadav and his wife obtained a loan of approximately Rs50 million (Rs5 crore) for the production of their directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata. After the film failed at the box office, repayment of the loan became difficult.

Several cheques issued to the complainant company, Murli Projects Private Limited, bounced, prompting legal proceedings under India’s Negotiable Instruments Act.

Due to accumulated interest and penalties, the outstanding amount reportedly increased to nearly Rs90 million.

Despite reaching a settlement agreement, Yadav allegedly failed to adhere to the agreed payment schedule.

As a result, the court took strict action earlier this month, leading to his surrender at Tihar Jail before he was granted conditional bail this week.
