RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) - A five-member panel of doctors carried out an eye examination of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail, sources said on Sunday.
According to sources, the medical check-up lasted nearly an hour. The team included Dr Rafaaq, Dr Sikandar, and Dr Arif among others.
Sources said the doctors began the examination after waiting approximately two and a half hours for PTI leadership representatives. However, no PTI leaders were present during the medical assessment.
Earlier, the jail superintendent confirmed that the doctors arrived with medical equipment and medicines, adding that a detailed report would be prepared soon.
Imran Khan, who claims he has lost 85% vision in his right eye due to a medical condition, was allowed access to doctors following directions from the Supreme Court.
His lawyer, Salman Safdar, visited him earlier this week and later submitted a report to the bench headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, raising concerns about his client’s health and requesting proper medical treatment.
Sources also revealed that an ambulance equipped with eye examination equipment was stationed inside the prison.
Jail officials confirmed that an initial medical report regarding the PTI founder’s treatment has been forwarded to the Punjab Home Department.
The report includes detailed medical data such as blood pressure, blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels, and other vital indicators. A separate medical report focusing specifically on his eye condition has also been submitted.
Additionally, consultation reports and records of medical staff involved in his treatment were provided. The documentation includes details of when and by whom examinations were conducted.
Jail sources said on-duty doctors check his vital signs three times daily, maintaining a regular medical record.
The Punjab Home Department had requested a complete medical report from Adiala Jail authorities.
CRVO Diagnosis
This development follows reports from two weeks ago stating that the PTI founder, who has been imprisoned since August 2023, was diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), a serious eye disorder.
CRVO typically affects older individuals and is often associated with underlying cardiovascular risks such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease.
Following this diagnosis, PTI leaders and family members expressed serious concerns about his health and demanded his transfer to a hospital for treatment.
While the federal government has maintained that all necessary medical facilities are being provided, PTI lawmakers and members of the opposition alliance Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Aiyeen Pakistan (TTAP) staged a sit-in at Parliament House on March 13, demanding his hospital transfer.
The protest, now in its third day, is taking place at Parliament House, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House, and Parliament Lodges.
Participants include National Assembly Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, and former chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur.
