UK introduces strict law for dual citizens entering the country

Updated on:

UK enforces strict rules for dual citizens from February 25, 2026, requiring British passports or costly certificates, prompting concerns over travel and accessibility for European citizens.

LONDON (Dunya News) - The United Kingdom has implemented a new law affecting dual citizens, requiring them to enter the country using a British passport only.

According to the Home Office, effective February 25, 2026, dual nationals will not be allowed to board flights, ferries, or trains to the UK without a valid British passport.

The new rules also mandate an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for all travelers, with a fee of £16. Those wishing to travel using a non-British passport must obtain a Certificate of Entitlement costing £589, which many have criticized as expensive and unfair.

The Home Office said the measure aims to make travel safer and more streamlined under the Digital Border System. However, families and European citizens have expressed concerns, as the rules are being enforced immediately and obtaining dual passports may be costly.

The organization “The Three Million,” which advocates for European citizens’ rights, has urged the UK government to provide a cheaper and simpler alternative to the Certificate of Entitlement.
