Ireland outplay Oman after scoring highest total in current T20 World Cup

(Web Desk) – Ireland defeated Oman by 96 runs in a group match of T20 World Cup at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground (SSC) in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Set a daunting 236 runs to win, Oman were bowled out in 18 overs for 139 runs. Opener Aamir Kaleem scored 50 runs on 29 balls hitting five fours and two sixes. Hammad Mirza shared 46 runs and Sufyan Mehmood 10.

Joshua Little captured three wickets while Matthew Humphreys and Barry McCarthy two wickets each for Ireland.

Earlier, stand-in captain Lorcan Tucker hit unbeaten 94 and led Ireland to the highest total – 235-5 – of the ongoing World Cup.

Gareth Delany contributed 56 off 36 balls that included three fours and four sixes. George Dockrell hit five sixes in his nine-ball 35.

Ireland were without captain Paul Stirling who sustained knee ligament damage during his side's 67-run loss to Australia in Colombo. Lorcan Tucker was named to lead the team in Stirling's absence.

Before today’s encounter, both Ireland and Oman have played two matches each in the ongoing World Cup and lost. Overall, Ireland have defeated Oman five times in seven matches.

Oman has defeated Ireland in the 2016 T20 World Cup which was incidentally their first-ever win in a World Cup tournament.
