Sri Lanka's Independence Day symbolises unity, national dignity: President Zardari

President expressed hope that the brotherly relations between Pakistan and Sri Lanka would continue to strengthen in the years to come.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - President Asif Ali Zardari said on Wenesday that Sri Lanka’s Independence Day stands as a symbol of unity, national dignity and resilience.

In a message on the occasion of Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day, President Zardari extended warm congratulations to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the government, and the people of Sri Lanka.

The president said that the friendship between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is time-tested and has stood firm through challenges. He noted that Sri Lanka had played an important role alongside Pakistan’s armed forces in the fight against terrorism, and praised Sri Lanka’s constructive role in promoting cooperation in South Asia.

President Zardari expressed regret over the prolonged suspension of SAARC summits due to India’s stance, terming it unfortunate. He stressed the need for Pakistan and Sri Lanka to work together for regional security in South Asia and for the revival of SAARC.

He further expressed hope that the brotherly relations between Pakistan and Sri Lanka would continue to strengthen in the years to come.
