Four moons appear in sky as rare phenomenon stuns onlookers

MOSCOW (Dunya News) - On the night of February 1–2, 2026, residents in St. Petersburg, Russia, and surrounding areas witnessed a rare and stunning atmospheric phenomenon where the moon appeared to be accompanied by three other luminous orbs, creating a "four moons" effect.

The rare spectacle quickly caught public attention, with photos and videos spreading rapidly across social media platforms.

In the viral footage, it initially appears as if the moon has split into multiple parts. Bright, glowing shapes can be seen forming around the moon, prompting skywatchers to stop and admire the stunning view for an extended period.

Experts clarified that the phenomenon was not a space-related or supernatural event, but a natural atmospheric occurrence known scientifically as paraselene, commonly referred to as “moon dogs” or “mock moons.”

This phenomenon occurs when moonlight passes through thin, high-altitude clouds made up of tiny ice crystals, known as cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. These flat, hexagonal ice crystals refract and reflect the moonlight, creating bright spots on either side of the moon.

Due to this light refraction, multiple moon-like images become visible in the sky, giving the illusion of four glowing moons. While the sight is considered rare, scientists emphasize that it is entirely natural and closely linked to specific atmospheric and weather conditions.
