LAHORE (Dunya News) – The investigation into the Bhatti Gate tragedy has been expanded to include not only the private firm involved in the project but also government officials accused of negligence, following strong intervention by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
Authorities halted work by SMS Design and Engineering System, the company overseeing the site, and broadened the probe to determine responsibility among “incompetent officers” who allegedly failed to enforce basic safety protocols. Officials said criminal negligence and violations of standard operating procedures were key factors behind the fatal incident.
Police arrested five suspects, including the company’s safety officers and owners, Usman Yasin and Salman Yasin. A four-day physical remand was granted by the court.
Among those under investigation are safety officer Muhammad Hanzala and other company staff identified as Asghar Ali and Ahmad Nawaz.
Officials said the post-mortem report, expected between Feb. 2 and 3, is likely to accelerate legal proceedings.
Following the chief minister’s notice, the Bhatti Gate site has been declared a secured zone. Authorities have imposed a complete ban on work without proper safety arrangements and introduced modern safety protocols across the area.
Speaking on the incident, CM Maryam Nawaz said accountability would be ensured for those responsible, adding that justice for the victims, including young Saadia and her infant daughter, remained her top priority.
