Elon Musk warns users as lawsuit questions WhatsApp's encryption claims

Updated on:

Elon Musk questioned WhatsApp's security on X after a US lawsuit alleged its end-to-end encryption claims are misleading. Meta denied the accusations, calling them baseless.

NEW YORK (Web Desk) - Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has once again questioned the security of WhatsApp, warning users that the popular messaging app may not be as safe as it claims. Posting on his social media platform X, Musk stated bluntly that “WhatsApp is not secure” and encouraged users to switch to X Chat instead.

Musk’s remarks came shortly after a Bloomberg report revealed details of a newly filed lawsuit against Meta Platforms in the United States.

The lawsuit challenges WhatsApp’s long-standing claim of providing end-to-end encryption, alleging that the company misleads users about the privacy of their messages.

According to Bloomberg, a group of users from Australia, Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa has filed the lawsuit in a US District Court in San Francisco.

The plaintiffs argue that Meta and WhatsApp have consistently assured users that their messages are fully private, while allegedly storing, analyzing, and potentially accessing those communications.

The lawsuit claims that WhatsApp explicitly tells users only participants in a chat can read messages, a promise the plaintiffs describe as false.

It further alleges that Meta employees may have access to user messages, contradicting the company’s public privacy statements.

The complaint references unnamed whistleblowers who claim to have knowledge of Meta’s internal practices, though no technical evidence has been presented so far.

Meta has strongly denied all allegations. Company spokesperson Andy Stone dismissed the lawsuit as baseless, stating that WhatsApp has used the Signal Protocol for end-to-end encryption for over a decade. He emphasized that claims suggesting WhatsApp messages are not secure are completely inaccurate.

Meta has also indicated it may pursue legal action against the plaintiffs and their lawyers. The case is currently under judicial review, and a final determination will be made following court proceedings.
