US, NATO reach preliminary agreement on Greenland

Under the proposed deal, the United States would exercise authority in selected areas of Greenland and gain a stake in its mineral resources

WASHINGTON (Web Desk) - A preliminary agreement has been reached between the United States and NATO regarding Greenland, modeled on the UK’s Cyprus agreement, under which Washington would be granted limited powers and a share in mineral resources.

According to a report by New York Times, US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte have agreed on a framework for an agreement covering Greenland and the wider Arctic region.

Under the proposed deal, the United States would exercise authority in selected areas of Greenland and gain a stake in its mineral resources.

Russia and China would not be allowed to interfere in any form, while the US would also install its advanced “Golden Dome” system in the region.

President Trump said that if finalized, the agreement would prove beneficial for the United States and all NATO member states.

On the occasion, Trump made a U-turn by withdrawing his earlier threat to impose tariffs on European countries, writing on his social media platform Truth that no new tariffs would be imposed on NATO next month.

As part of the agreement, the United States would be able to conduct military exercises, intelligence missions, and training activities without seeking permission from Denmark.

Earlier, President Trump had said he wanted to buy Greenland rather than lease it, adding that he did not need rare minerals.

He also promised to build what he described as the greatest “golden dome” ever on the island.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the issue of Greenland’s ownership should be resolved between the United States and Denmark, saying Russia has no objections.
