NDMA warns of flash flood risk in northern Pakistan

Updated on:

Flash flooding is likely in areas of Dir, Chitral, Swat, and Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, along with their associated streams and drainage channels

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of NDMA has issued a medium-level flash flood alert for northern and western regions, cautioning that heavy snowfall and rainfall may trigger sudden water surges in River Kabul’s upper catchments and tributaries.

The advisory highlights risks in Panjkora, Swat, and Kalpani streams, where combined weather conditions could sharply increase water flows in associated nullahs and tributaries, posing threats to vulnerable areas.

Flash flooding is likely in areas of Dir, Chitral, Swat, and Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, along with their associated streams and drainage channels, while low to medium flows are anticipated in River Kabul at Nowshera and downstream of Tarbela Dam.

Provincial and District Disaster Management Authorities have been advised to remain on high alert, closely monitor vulnerable locations, and strictly follow extreme weather advisories issued by local administrations.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel near nullahs, low-lying areas, and vulnerable slopes, while emergency services have been directed to ensure readiness for timely rescue and evacuation operations, if required. NDMA, through NEOC, is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with provincial and district authorities to ensure preparedness and prompt response to any flood-related incidents.

The public is encouraged to stay informed through official channels and by downloading Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application for real-time updates.
