LAHORE (Dunya News) – The capital city of Punjab is poised for a major administrative overhaul as Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has granted approval in principle to divide Lahore into two separate districts.
The move aims to reduce administrative pressure and enhance service delivery in the province’s capital.
The decision, made in a high-level meeting, outlines that Lahore’s administrative restructuring will commence immediately after the Basant festival. Under the new arrangement, Deputy Commissioners, police, and municipal systems will operate separately in each district, ensuring more efficient governance and closer oversight of public services.
The restructuring will redefine Lahore’s administrative boundaries to improve the delivery of civic services. Key issues such as traffic management, encroachments, and municipal complaints are expected to be addressed more effectively through the two-district model. The Punjab government highlighted that Lahore’s large population has necessitated this split, allowing for quicker response to public grievances.
The chief minister directed relevant departments to complete preparations for the new administrative setup without delay. A follow-up meeting has been scheduled for 9 February to finalise remaining details. Lahore’s division is being described as a significant step in urban governance reforms for the province.
Maryam Nawaz emphasised that splitting Lahore is essential for public convenience and better governance. She stated that service delivery will become faster and more effective, while traffic, encroachment, and municipal issues will be addressed systematically under the new structure. The chief minister clarified that the move is purely administrative, not political, and will strengthen the city’s complaint resolution mechanisms.
She further noted that the Lahore division is part of a broader initiative to introduce modern and efficient governance models for the province’s major cities. She reiterated that citizen relief and transparent governance remain the government’s foremost priorities.
