(Web Desk) - Former Australian Test cricketer Damien Martyn has released his first statement after emerging from a coma.

He said that on December 27, his life was taken away from him, and he fought a serious illness in a coma for eight days.

Martyn revealed that doctors had given him only a 50/50 chance of survival. After waking from the coma, he initially could neither walk nor speak. However, just four days later, he surprised doctors by starting to walk and speak again.

He expressed immense joy at returning home and feeling the sand beneath his feet at the beach. Martyn also thanked everyone who supported him and his family during the difficult time.

“This experience reminded me how fragile life is,” he said. “Everything can change in an instant, and time is precious. Get ready for 2026… I’m back.”

Martyn had fallen seriously ill on Christmas Day due to a severe fever, which led to his condition becoming critical. He was placed in a coma and admitted to the ICU at a Brisbane hospital.

The former cricketer was a member of Australia’s 2003 World Cup-winning team. He played 67 Test matches for Australia, along with 208 One-Day Internationals and 4 T20 matches.
